Orangutan attempts to hunt fish with spear

It is the first time one has been seen using a tool to hunt.

A male orangutan, clinging precariously to overhanging branches, flails the water with a pole, trying desperately to spear a passing fish.

  1. They’re evolving!! or maybe they’re already just really cool…

  6. Hey, we all started somewhere!
Considering cousin Orangutang branched off our evolutionary tree way back before bibletimes, he’s got some catching up to do.
    Nice try though…

  8. I wonder what he is doing? Testing the waters? Trying to stir up clams and such? He’s certainly not trying to spear a fish, but it’s still very very impressive as tool use goes. He doesn’t look like he’s playing around.

  9. this looks suspect to me…photoshop maybe?

  10. It is NOT the first time an Orangutan has been seen using a pole as a tool . They routinely use poles for testing the depth of water when crossing.

  15. I am a Photoshop expert and this is definitely a fake. I wish it wasn’t.

So here’s how you can tell. Notice his hand and the position of his wrist — there’s no way it can move back, i.e. therefore create enough momentum to “smack” anything.

In other words a real chimp would hold it like a club. But this picture shows him holding it “drumstick” style like Gene Krupa. Not real.

The reason is because in the original photo the chimp had been no doubt swinging “too” something and therefore chose an underhand grip.

    Nice try whoever.

  26. You idiots, its 100% legit, 100% real.. monkeys don’t act exactly the same as humans… and not all monkeys act like each other..wanna know another reason i KNOW that it’s real?! I opened it up in notepad.. Photos that are manipulated show in notepad what programs were involved in it’s production.. and guess what guys…. NO programs were involved in the making of it.. NONE… so there goes your theories….

Theoretically..one could Manipulate the photo manually and then scan it.. but that was not done here.

  30. Totally Fake

    1) Tree that the monkey is hanging from doesn’t match the other side. Rainforest-type vs on the other side they are standard deciduous trees.

    2) Grip wrong as noted before

    3) place where someone else was standing under the monkey’s elbow – photoshopped out poorly. You can still see the water-rings, shadow, hat/fish whatever that is etc.

Its true – apes use tools in the wild – rock-hammers, mini-ant-spears, etc. But this is not a true example.
