Uh Oh, Going Postal!

Wal-Mart in my neighborhood did a similar thing…at one time they were open 24 hrs/day. then one day a sign appears stating “now open 7am – 11pm for my shopping convenience”
— Mike · Apr 29, 06:11 AM · #
I saw that sign at my local post office. It was pretty convenient because the machine was blocking the toilet.
Eh, who am I kidding, I’ve never even been to America.

They have (had?) really slick ATM-like postage machines in the Lake Oswego, Oregon branch —- which they they decided to EOL because? From what I can tell, they worked too well and were taking away all of the business from the humans behind the counter. To top it off, the ATM-like machines handled postage for parcels, etc., and were available 24/7.

The Y is a typo.
It should’ve read: FOR OUR CONVENIENCE

I once used a postal stamp vending machine that was kept in the lobby of a very busy building. I slid $10.00 into the slot — no stamps. There was an “800” number printed on the machine, which promised refunds if called. The 800 number was disconnected when I called it. For a year, I saw numerous people put their money into that same machine without getting any stamps back. I watched them write down the 800 number and I knew that they were as screwed out of $10 as was I. I even tried reporting the problem to the local post office, but nobody knows anything, you know? Finally, the machine just disappeared. It WAS a convenience to have that robber removed.

This is a national thing. Their excuse is that it’s harder to get parts for the old vending machines. So over a year or two they’ll slowly disappear from all USPS lobbies.
Also, a year or two ago they removed all clocks from USPS lobbies. This was done to “improve” the customer experience. If you don’t how long you’ve been waiting in line then you’ll supposedly get less upset.

For your convenience = for our convenience.
— Rob · Apr 29, 08:00 AM · #
Yeah, getting stamps is like an act of god now.
— Chase · Apr 29, 08:08 AM · #
They removed the stamp vending machine for my local post office years ago. Never really worked anyway.
— jeff · Apr 29, 08:11 AM · #
@tormaline: I removed the machine when everyone in your building finally caught on. I installed it in another building where it’s delightfully bilking a whole new set of victims. Thank you for your small part of funding my retirment!

Because the USPS Offices are sooo convenient to begin with ….

bastards
— ltz · Apr 29, 12:18 PM · #
i liked those machines, they accepted pennies.
— b · Apr 29, 12:38 PM · #
The people that serviced those machines have all been removed for your convenience as well. So take comfort, knowing that some poor bastard just took it in the neck and lost his cozy machine job. Damn your eyes.
— Beany O Greeny · Apr 29, 02:31 PM · #
i liked those machine they dispense dollar coins.
now i have to stand in-line.
— jason taverner · Apr 29, 04:01 PM · #
I think I saw that sign. Was it at Edendale Station? Our machine kept breaking down, finally they got rid of it.
— Goliath · Apr 29, 04:04 PM · #
The old machines were nice because you could buy 1 cent stamps.
Now you have to spend at least a dollar.
— Alex · Apr 29, 10:13 PM · #
Happened at my local post office, too
— Blake · Apr 30, 01:57 AM · #
hehehe….I always had the feeling that the guys who went “postal” did so because they were the only ones in the postal service capable of intelligent thought
— Al · Apr 30, 02:38 AM · #
hehehe nice
— Ruby on Rails · Apr 30, 03:34 AM · #
You people have no idea what the USPS does day in and day out. you think it is easy keeping everyone connected the way they do? Think about the numbers here. over a billion pieces of mail each DAY!!!!!
— drummer101us · May 1, 08:56 AM · #
So? Something being hard is no excuse for it to be incompetent.
— Anon · May 1, 04:44 PM · #
You know how to tell it’s Christmas at the Post Office?
The ‘Next Window Please’ signs are green and red.
— Howard · May 6, 07:42 AM · #
This is probably the result of local postal workers being frustrated by higher management. In 2006, the post office started removing stamp vending machines. This was a deliberate political decision to subsidize private stamp resellers. If there are no stamp machines, then you have to go elsewhere. No one— no one at all— prefers not to be able to purchase single stamps when they need one, but that is the party line senior management is sticking to. Hence this sign. I printed it out and took it to my local post office and the staff there got quite a laugh. They have been specifically told by management not to tell customers to complain about it, which leaves them in the untenable position of having to defend an indefensible policy.
— Brad · May 20, 11:53 AM · #
apparently printer margins were ignored and the first line read “SORRY”
— klappy · Jun 18, 06:54 AM · #
Perhaps the vending machine was blocking the entrance to the post office, or something inconvenient like that.
— spotcatbug · Jul 1, 01:56 PM · #
What is the thought process behind this? Does it not make the lines longer as you must wait with everyone else just to but a damn stamp?
— Solinkable · Jul 1, 05:41 PM · #
lol, ridiculous
