Men pay more for insurance because we used to get in more accidents than women because there used to be more of men driving. This isn’t the case any more but who expects the insurance companies to actually lower premiums.

What is scary to me is that the whole thing fell down so easily. Sure it was hit pretty hard, but that roof looks very heavy (look how it destroyed the truck as it came down) and the support columns seem very flimsy, and there are only two of them. I would not be surprised if some building codes had been violated there.

Full Story:

At approximately 3 PM, Tuesday, July 2, a 2008 Dodge Ram 2500, pulling a new travel trailer, hit the corner of the Texas State Bank Drive-In on Tenaha Street, causing the complete awning to come to the ground. Luckily, the driver of the Dodge, Mickey Miller, of Garrison and his 10 year old son were able to exit their vehicle uninjured.

According to Miller he was circling the bank to park on the other side when the corner of his travel trailer caught the corner of the bank awning. Next thing he heard was a rumble as the awning started falling against his driver’s side door. Somehow he was able to unbuckle the seat beat and exit the other side of his truck as it was falling.

Mark Ivy of Texas State Bank stated that the main lobby would be open for business while the drive-in is being repaired.

That said, the headline here is the real WTF?

First, he didn’t hit the awning with his truck; he hit it with his trailer. Second, he was OBVIOUSLY not trying to use the ATM, but rather drive around the awning. Look how far away from the machine he is, dumbasses.

Anyway, all that said, I’m amazed the guy lived. He got out the other side of the truck, and fast! I gotta say, in the same situation, I don’t know if I would have been able to do the same. So, go him for that.

How about your incapacity to think critically? The video clearly shows the driver is trying to go around the building. Jimbo then pointed out that he was clearly trying to go around the building. Did you get it? Nope, after all the name of the video is that the driver was using the ATM, so it has to be true. Once you got guys got stuck on that, you kind of filter out any sort of logic.

Once again, it’s simple: the driver just made too little of a turn while trying to go around the bank.

Realistically, if they weren’t that good at depth perception to know if they were clear they probably shouldn’t have been the one driving.

in my experience, and Im not saying that this is true for all women drivers… but on average, the person who sucks the most at driving tends to be a woman. its strange, but it always has to do with a cell phone, or beating their children… one way or another they tend to be more distracted than the typical driver.

Anybody whose said anything about that the structure should have been able to withstand that or that it was built cheaply really doesn’t know anything about physics or you can’t seem to remember.

You really need to remember about torque, free body diagrams, moment arms (levers), shear strength tolerance, force, and momentum.

All of the above played into that.

You have the momentum of the trailer, P=M*V. That momentum was transferred into the roof via the conservation of momentum. So now we have the mass of the roof hit by an object with velocity V which causes the roof to be accelerated at A from a velocity of 0. Force is F=M*A so now we have an amount of force being exerted. Now the moment arm is the length of each support column becoming a lever. Draw a FBD (free body diagram) and you can figure out the amount of torque, torque being Tq=F*R where R represents the length of the column, being generated. Also with this same diagram you can find out how much force is being exerted as a shear force at any given distance on the column. At some point along the column the critical shear strength (failure point) was reached causing the material to rip apart the point at which the entire structure collapsed, at 5 seconds. It doesn’t take long which can be explained with calculus as F=dP/dT which represents force is the change in momentum (dP) with respect to the change in time (dT).

So sure speak ignorantly about the structure being weak and not having stood up at all. This is the same reason America thinks you have to drive an SUV to be safe on the road if you get hit when instead you’re wasting money on gas.

Buildings in earthquake zones have to withstand lateral forces. I imagine the steel rebar used in the pillars wasn’t of the correct grade and sheared at the point where the pillar meets the roof structure. I’d also say that a solid concrete roof on this structure was overkill (almost literally).

Once upon a time the idea of discussions following articles made me think things like “wow, just imagine the possibilities.” I would think of experts from different trades offering up details that others didn’t know about (and no, I’m not talking about the physics student in #70). I imagine people from the area posting comments about what they saw and discussions about how things could be encouraged, or in this case, prevented, what’s right, wrong, and so on.

Instead, what I’ve learned is that any of the people out there who might care about right/wrong or what really happened simply invent their own details to go with the story. People become experts on construction without even stopping to consider how construction differs from design (good post #46).

And then there are the masses, who simply strike out in a discriminatory fashion. It’s either gender, ethnicity, social status, or something else like that.

For the most part I see people who have issues with other people and could care less about what’s really going on. They simply use the comments as a means to express their problems. Men who hate women use the comments to say so. People who hate Americans do the same. People who don’t like SUVs are no different…

And it just turns into a giant b$tchfest.

In the end, only the smart-as$, witty, and humorous posts end up having any value and it’s entertainment value, not informational value. Post number 68 says it all.
