Look up irony in the dictionary. That’s not ironic. Amusing yes, but not ironic.

Look up “Dr Bob” in the dictionary, and you’ll see how Ironic it is that I find it amusing that your an Donkey’s Ass!

My pet peeve used to be people who identified something non-ironic as irony.
Now it’s people who identify something that’s obviously ironic as non-irony. Idiot.

1.d Incongruity between what might be expected and what actually occurs: “Hyde noted the irony of Ireland’s copying the nation she most hated” (Richard Kain).
1.e An occurrence, result, or circumstance notable for such incongruity. See Usage Note at ironic.

“amusing that your an Donkey’s Ass”
My pet peeve is the use of ‘your’ to denote the contractive form of ‘you are’. I’ll assume the use of ‘an’ was a result of the later inclusion of the word ‘Donkey’.
— Tony Morris · Apr 27, 03:46 PM · #
There are three main types of Irony:
*Verbal irony, where the speaker says one thing, while meaning the other
*Dramatic irony, When words or actions hold a certain significance to the audience, but not to the speaker.
*Situational irony, When the action is contrary to the intended reaction
Both verbal and situational (to a lesser degree) irony apply here. As a side note I would guess that verbal irony was the closest thing to the original meaning when irony became a word in the English language.
now shut the fuck up and enjoy the picture.
— anonymous · Apr 27, 03:46 PM · #
Not to step on anyone’s toes, but the word “Irony” as we know it today is fairly distorted from what it meant not too long ago. The photo technically is not “ironic”, but it certainly fits what most people think “irony” is. I didn’t think this myself until not that long ago. The best explanation of this is on the wikipedia entry for irony.
— nobody · Apr 27, 03:56 PM · #

— h0dg3s · Apr 27, 04:10 PM · #
I’d argue it’s dramatic irony, since we, the audience, hold a knowledge or immediate thought of how telemarketers act, whereas the heads of this telemarketing branch had not had such concerns when having this sign painted; they were simply trying to keep people from standing around in front of their building.
— Fx71 · Apr 27, 04:20 PM · #
It’s not ironic that a national association of telemarketers allows absolutely no soliciting? I think some people somehow didn’t connect that telemarketers are, in fact, solicitors. So to really put it plainly, and to the extreme, the people who may want to step foot into this premise because it was made for them (telemarketers) are actually not allowed to because they are in fact solicitors. So one would expect that this office space would be empty until the end of time…see the irony?

Dr. Bob,
What my friends here meant to say was that you are mistaken while claiming that this picture is not of an ironic situation. I apologize for any ruthless and distasteful remarks made towards yourself. I can imagine where Dr. Bob may be coming from. At first glance it appeared to me as if the “no soliciting” sign was on another door. In that case it wouldn’t be ironic. Only after a while it occured to me that it’s the window of the same unit. Yes, it is ironic.
— Paul · Apr 27, 08:20 PM · #
Clearly, whether it is on the window of an adjacent company or not, it is not ironic; I am, however, too tired of clearing up this misunderstanding on-line to point out why. Instead, let’s approach something more fundamental:
Jonny B, when you say, “I find it amusing that your an Donkey’s Ass!”, any argument you are trying to make is rendered irrelevant because, through not knowing the difference between “your” and “you’re” you are demonstrating, in advance of your argument being though through by the reader, that you are thick. Similarly, “an” before “Donkey’s”? Tut, tut, tut thickie.

Ironic is a situation that happens unexpected to a typical outcome. If it were normal that telemarketers accepted soliciting (which is retarded) then this would indeed be ironic. However, as has been pointed out above, it is hypocritical – not ironic.
Way to look like retards, those who argued against Dr. Bob…
— Oliver Charles · Apr 28, 12:49 AM · #
Here’s why it’s not ironic, Solicitation is illegal, telemarketing is not.
It’d only be ironic if the national association of telemarketing is known for being using Solicitation.

— asdgf · Apr 28, 01:26 AM · #
For those who clearly are challenged when it comes to using the English language: irony requires intent. Hypocritical is a much better description of this unintentional juxtaposition. We now return you to the regular diatribes written by Americans whose only understanding of the English language is, at best, accidental.
— L.E.N.L. · Apr 28, 01:45 AM · #
Alanis Morrissette isn’t a Yank. She’s Canadian.
And it’s ironic that she sang a song about irony in which nothing was actually ironic. So in the end it was ironic.
— Robert V · Apr 28, 02:24 AM · #
What’s ironic, hypocritical, and full of irony are petty gripes about definitions and the lack of intelligence of commenters. That’s why I usually don’t bother waste my time replying to such crap. This time though it’s just plain funny and amazing how people give a damn about what others know or don’t know and justify hours on end commenting about it. Get a life you sad sacks, especially those complaining about Americans. You exhibit pompous and asinine qualities if you believe you’re above others without knowing them beyond a sentence in a comment section.

Dr. Bob clearly does not know the many different forms of irony. One of the may forms is that something happens that you don’t expect. Clearly, for this group, you don’t expect them to be against solicitation, and that is ironic. Don’t listen to George Carlin about irony, he is wrong, and Sheryl Crow is correct.
— alps · Apr 28, 04:44 AM · #
HM2K, you couldn’t be further from the truth! Solicitation is not only legal, it is protected by the Constitution!
Also, I was incorrect, it was Alanis Morissette, not Cheryl Crow.
— alps · Apr 28, 04:50 AM · #
True enough about Alanis. However, you should note that a song named “Ironic”, pointedly asking if many non-ironic situations aren’t ironic, is, in fact, itself, extremely ironic.
One might even say gloriously meta-ironic. The song itself is ironic in just about all the known senses of the word. Ironic, isn’t it? (errr).

Some people just have to pick everything apart. It’s their curse. I usually try to be thankful that I don’t have to BE them. In other words: I’m thankful that I don’t always have to prove other people wrong. I’m thankful that I can accept others as they are. I’m thankful for the peace of mind that comes with leaving other’s to just be themselves. Trust me, I used to buy into the “one up” game. It never ends. The only way out is to just live and let live. Situational irony is a discrepancy between the expected and actual result. The discrepancy is that telemarketers need to solicit in their line of work, and you would expect them to stay mum about others doing so. But in an unexpected hypocrisy they openly oppose it.
This definition of irony is fairly recent, and hotly debated, but saying “HURR HURR THATS NOT IRONY DUMBASS” makes you an ignorant twat.
— MikedaSnipe · Apr 30, 11:43 AM · #

What I find ironic is that you guys have been discussing irony since April 27th without (many. I’m not going to see if someone actually posted it just to increase the irony) posting a define definition.
To quoteth The All Powerful Knowner of Knowledge, Google (via Princeton):
“# sarcasm: witty language used to convey insults or scorn; “he used sarcasm to upset his opponent”; “irony is wasted on the stupid”; “Satire is a …
# incongruity between what might be expected and what actually occurs; “the irony of Ireland’s copying the nation she most hated”
# a trope that involves incongruity between what is expected and what occurs”
That being said, this picture is very funny.

— Robotguy4 · May 3, 06:57 PM · #
Quite a debate seems to have been started here. For this picture to be ironic, you would have to have expected the National Association of Telemarketers to want to be solicited. Then, seeing the sign the sign in the picture would be ironic. I think this picture is technically better described as being coincidental than ironic, because there is no reason to expect telemarketers to want to be solicited any more than anybody else.

Maybe some of you morons telling this guy (or girl?) to look up the definition of irony should do so yourself. What’s that? You already know the definition? Apparently not. Might I suggest you all shut up? Irony defined:
The American Heritage Dictionary.
i-ro-ny n.
pl. i-ro-nies
1 The use of words to express somthing different from and often opposite to their literal meaning.
2 An expression or utterance marked by a deliberate contrast between apparent and intended meaning.
3 A literary style employing such contrasts for humorous or rhetorical effect.
4 Incongruity between what might be expected and what actually occurs
5 An occurrence, result, or circumstance notable for such incongruity.
This picture here loosely follows the definition of irony as it best fits example five. For those of you who do not understand big words like ‘incongruty’,, this means that something does not agree. A no soliciting sign on a telemarketers place of business would adequately fit a definition of incongruence therefore this picture does qualify as a form of irony as there is more than one form. I’d like to take this oppertunity to thank you all for shutting up. Thank you.
— The Texas Trucker · May 6, 11:54 AM · #
All are dumb as shit! isn’t that ironic bitches!
— bbj · May 7, 05:10 AM · #
This is not, strictly speaking, ironic. One would expect a telemarketer to be just as annoyed to receive a telemarketing phone call during dinner as anyone else is. In the same way, one would expect a business owner to prohibit any sort of soliciting on his premises, even if his business is soliciting on my premises. A sign that says, “Solicitors, Apply Within”, would be mildly ironic. If someone did answer the aforementioned ad, and mentioned their experience soliciting on the premises, that would be significantly more ironic. If we somehow got the telephone number of this office, and constantly called them with resumes, assuming they actually had the ‘Solicitors, Apply Within’ ad, that would truly be ironic. Actually, war-dialing any known telemarketing firm, with any message, is, at the very least, dramatic irony.
That being said, these people are awful hypocrites.

Poor bastard just had to be the first comment posted. Now 136 posts to point out how stupid he is.
Well-deserved.

From Wikipedia: “There is some argument about what is or is not ironic, but all the different senses of irony revolve around the perceived notion of an incongruity between what is said and what is meant; or between an understanding of reality, or an expectation of a reality, and what actually happens.”
Solicitors posting a sign that says “No Soliciting.” I would say that is ironic and hypocritical.
Also, someone said soliciting is illegal. The solicitation that is illegal is Person A paying Person B to commit a crime. Door-to-door sales can be prohibited by local ordinances, hence the reason for a sign. Having a sign that says “No door-to-door sales” when door-to-door sales are illegal is like putting a sign that says “No Murdering.”

This is American Irony, because too many Americans don’t understand the original definition, which to be fair, is quite tricky.
